1) He/She must want kids.
2) He/She must be a Christian.
3) He/She must want to work in full-time ministry.
4) He/She must love the movie, “The Notebook.”
5) He/She must love taking long walks on the beach.
Sound Familiar?
A list of “non-negotiables” is pretty common in the realm of Christianity. Are they wrong? No. But are they your answer to finding the one? Nope, not even close.
Having a list of what you are looking for in a significant other is great. It means you actually took time to think for a change. But I think there is something way more important than a list that describes your perfect mate.
Can you guess what it is? It’s who you need to be first.
My Point: Focus on being the right person before looking for the right person. Everyone wants to find their future husband or wife, but what everyone needs to realize is that a relationship without God will eventually turn into a relationshipwreck. (clever huh?)
God is more focused on who you are becoming, than who you need to be with. Turn the focus on your heart before trying to gain the love of someone else’s.
Don’t worry: He/She will come when the time is right. But don’t let your impatience ruin your inner-transformation. Seeking God first is always the way to go. He will never stray you wrong.
Psalm 105:4 – Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

Love this post. It is true that we often focus on so many things and miss out on what is important as we search for the one.
Thanks Rhona!
Above all, we must seek God’s Kingdom. After all, everything is in His time, and God’s will is good, pleasing and perfect. Worth the wait in Christ!
Amen. Chris > all.
Thank you Jarrid. You are a good messenger of God. May He bless your relationship.
Btw, thank you for praying for Honduras it meant a lot to me and to God :)
Thanks Stephanie! Praying.
It’s great that you resent this today, really helped to explain a few things to a friend in need
Thanks Aj, that means a lot!
Thank you for the advice, this is the truth… I just wish a lot of people understood what it means to be in a relationship and having God put them together instead of fornication, just because they’re lusting for one another. It’s sad that soo many people mistake lust from love.
Really needed this. Thanks Jarrid for your wisdom!
Thanks for all your posts bro, especially this one. They not only help me personally but they allow me to help others as well. You’re changing lives and hearts everyday man. Keep being bold! Opening eyes, changing the outcome #Ananias
That’s the same advice I give to my college students, and have held onto for myself. Focus first on who you are becoming, and you will be ready for God to send someone into your life. Great words, Jarrid.
two words: SO true.
Superb blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally confused .. Any ideas? Appreciate it!
excellent points altogether, you just gained a new reader.
Awesome awesome awesome!!!
I’m actually going through some issues with a relationship I was in not too long ago. This post helped confirm what he and I recently discussed–that he and I both rushed into something when we weren’t ready. I know God is still molding me into the woman of God He needs me to be, and He is doing the same with the guy I was with. Right now, it seems that we are both “paying” for rushing into things, and it’s a painful process but definitely a lesson learned. I just hope and pray for God’s supernatural peace over us both and for the unwavering confidence to believe that if things are meant to be, they will be…even if it doesn’t look that way now.
Good article. I find myself being impatient with this a lot. Probably from trying to make the wrong relationship work when my heart is wrong and the other person just isn’t for me. This helped calm me down and I am going to focus on making my own heart right with God. Thank you for posting this
